Since 2018, Adif has been driving the development of the Mediterranean Corridor, an ambitious railway project aimed at connecting Spain’s eastern coast with the rest of Europe. With bids exceeding 8 billion euros in investment, and more than 6 billion already awarded, this infrastructure is shaping up to be a crucial element for the country’s economic, logistical, and environmental growth.
Adif recently opened a new office in Almería, Andalusia, strengthening its presence in the south and speeding up the development of the railway network in the region. This office joins the existing ones in Valencia and Barcelona, marking significant progress in the project.
By the year 2024, plans include the execution of more than 1.3 billion euros in projects that will improve and expand the network towards southern Spain. Notably, the electrification of the Algeciras–Bobadilla section, the Loja bypass in Granada, and the connection between Granada, Almería, and Murcia are planned, which will allow a future link between Algeciras and France via a European standard gauge.
The project also encompasses new endeavors, such as the doubling of the track between Valencia and Alicante with an investment of 22.7 million euros, and a new rail access to the Port of Castellón, crucial for freight transport. While the Corridor is expected to be fully operational by 2030, some sections face technical challenges that may affect the timeline.
In addition to physical deployment, the Mediterranean Corridor is committed to digital transformation through the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology, an essential tool for centralizing information and facilitating collaboration. According to Borja Sánchez Ortega, Project Director at Espacio BIM, this approach not only improves coordination but also ensures more efficient use of time and resources throughout the project’s lifecycle.
With over 85% of the route having approved projects and 80% under construction or completed, the Mediterranean Corridor stands out as one of Europe’s leading railway projects, integrating investment, political effort, and technological innovation to transform transportation in Spain and its connection with the continent.
