Practical Tips to Protect Your Home from the Cold and Storms According to Allianz Partners

With the arrival of winter, weather adversities such as frost and storms have increased in frequency, creating a significant risk for home safety. A recent study by INESE on multi-risk home insurance reveals that the most common damages during this season are caused by water, accounting for 44% of incidents, followed by breakage of windows at 19%, and electrical damage at 11.6%, due to the increased use of heating.

Phenomena like frost and hailstorms are particularly damaging to properties. Frost can cause cracks in roofs and coverings as water freezes and expands, while hail can deteriorate exposed surfaces. To mitigate these risks, adopting a series of precautions can make a significant difference.

Checking the condition of your home’s roof or cover is a priority, ensuring they are waterproof and that tiles are intact. During storms, it’s crucial to keep doors and windows closed to prevent water entry. Also, regularly running water through faucets helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Exposed pipes should be adequately insulated to avoid freezing, and if they do freeze, it’s important not to use hot water to defrost them as it could cause permanent damage. In addition, it’s vital to perform constant maintenance on antennas, chimneys, and other fixed elements of the house.

During storms, ensuring a good seal on doors and windows with rubber or foam strips can prevent leaks, while keeping blinds down protects the glass. In homes with floating floors, it is advisable to seal the floor and fireplaces with silicone or rubber for added protection. Also, regularly cleaning gutters and downspouts prevents blockages that can lead to moisture.

Mario Pérez, head of Home Commercial at Allianz Partners Spain, noted that the recent weather adversities serve as a warning of the dangers homes can face. Pérez emphasizes the importance of being prepared to counteract flooding, glass breakage, and other damage, highlighting that Allianz Partners not only provides assistance in critical situations but also focuses on preventing incidents and ensuring proper home maintenance.
