Six Essential Professions to Promote Sustainable Construction in 2025

In an effort to lead the transformation towards a more sustainable sector, construction experts have outlined a set of professions that will be crucial by the year 2025. Identified by Sto Iberica, this list of six professional profiles aims to tackle the challenge of sustainability in construction, an area facing increasing pressure to comply with ever-stricter environmental regulations.

The concern for the environment and the responsibility of buildings in this context have led to a rise in the demand for more efficient and responsible construction solutions. However, a challenge stands in the way of this demand: the scarcity of skilled labor. This shortage of trained personnel complicates the fulfillment of the ambitious energy efficiency and sustainability goals that have been set both nationally and internationally.

With 2025 on the horizon, the construction sector must prepare to adapt to a new Technical Building Code (CTE) along with an increase in projects supported by both public and private financing. Training and the recruitment of specialized talent thus emerge as strategic priorities for the future. It is crucial to ensure that personnel are adequately prepared not only to comply with current regulations but also to effectively contribute to environmental conservation.

According to data from the European Commission, the shortage of skilled workers in the construction sector in the European Union is notable and hampers the adoption of sustainable practices. In Spain, the National Construction Confederation (CNC) has warned that it will be necessary to add more than 700,000 workers in the coming years to respond to the growing demand for sustainable projects and to meet energy efficiency objectives.

José Almagro, General Manager of Sto Iberica, has highlighted the urgent need for professionals well-trained in new technologies and methodologies that promote sustainability. According to him, the development of specialized talent stands as an essential pillar for transforming the industry and effectively facing current environmental challenges. Moreover, Almagro emphasizes that for construction to position itself competitively at a global level, it is indispensable to combine continuous training with technological innovation.

Within this framework, the six professional profiles outlined as essential for the future of sustainable construction include the sustainable construction and energy efficiency specialist, BIM manager, renewable energy installation consultant, circular economy specialist, efficient climate control engineer, and sustainable construction systems applicator. Each of these roles plays a critical function in the transition towards a construction model that is more respectful of the environment.

The clear necessity to incorporate these specialists becomes evident as the construction sector seeks to adapt to the demands of the present and anticipate those of the future in an effort to align its practices with a more sustainable approach.
