AleaSoft: Minimum Prices in European Electricity Markets in April Driven by Solar Energy and Gas

Here’s the translation to American English:

In April 2025, European electricity markets have experienced a significant decline in their monthly prices, reaching levels not seen since November of the previous year. This change is largely due to the fall in gas prices, which have hit their lowest monthly average since August. Additionally, a substantial increase in photovoltaic production has contributed to this trend, marking record figures for an April in several countries across the continent. This is coupled with a decrease in electricity demand and in carbon dioxide emission prices.

Notable electricity markets, such as MIBEL encompassing Portugal and Spain, reported monthly prices of €25.91/MWh and €26.81/MWh, respectively. This performance contrasts with the trend in many other European markets, where prices primarily remained below €80/MWh.

Solar photovoltaic generation has increased significantly compared to the same month last year and also from March, reaching historic levels in countries such as Germany, Spain, Italy, and France. However, wind production has shown a decline compared to data from previous years and the previous month. Likewise, electricity demand has recorded a drop relative to the levels of 2024 and March of this year.

On another note, TTF gas futures in the ICE market achieved their lowest monthly average since August 2024. Prices for CO2 emission allowances, measured in the EEX market, have also decreased compared to March. In the oil sector, Brent futures reached a monthly average in April not seen since May 2021.

This behavior in electricity markets reflects complex dynamics and a growing influence of renewable energy, which are transforming the way energy is produced and consumed in Europe.
