Awareness of Guipuzkoan Pharmacists Regarding Sexually Transmitted Infections at the EHU Campus

Here’s the translation to American English:

In the context of Healthy Universities Day, the University of the Basque Country (EHU) has launched a series of activities aimed at informing and raising awareness within its community about sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Between today and October 9, a group of pharmacists, coordinated by the Official College of Pharmacists of Gipuzkoa (COFG), will be available on the San Sebastián campus, where they will provide information about these infections as well as the opportunity to undergo rapid testing for HIV and syphilis.

This initiative is part of the Spanish Network of Health-Promoting Universities (REUPS), of which EHU is an active member. Its central goal is health education and the promotion of healthy habits among young people, especially in a context where a concerning increase in STIs has been observed in the Basque Country.

The recent 2024 Report from the Basque Plan for AIDS and STIs reveals that cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis have experienced an alarming increase, doubling the figures from the previous year. The data indicates that the most affected group corresponds to young people aged 20 to 34. Specifically, 3,000 cases of chlamydia, 1,861 of gonorrhea, and 490 of syphilis have been recorded, underscoring the need for an effective educational response.

The COFG emphasizes the importance of reinforcing prevention and education in sexual health, highlighting the crucial role that pharmacists play as health professionals in promoting responsible sexual habits. Gratitude is expressed towards the University of the Basque Country for collaborating on initiatives that not only seek to inform but also empower young people to make informed decisions regarding their sexual health.
