DHL Freight, recognized as a leader in road transportation in Europe, has taken a significant step towards improving efficiency and sustainability in its operations by adding two DÚO vehicles to its fleet. These innovative trucks, composed of two connected semi-trailers, have a total length of 31.75 meters, making them the highest capacity road transport option on the continent.
The introduction of these DÚO vehicles will allow DHL to optimize its transport services between the terminals in Madrid and Barcelona. Additionally, a notable reduction in environmental impact is expected, with these units estimated to decrease emissions by around 90% thanks to their use of HVO fuel, a biofuel that supports sustainability.
However, the length and weight of the duotrailers mean that they are subject to special regulations. They have restrictions on certain roads and their use in international transport is limited. Nevertheless, each semi-trailer in the set can operate independently, providing greater flexibility in DHL’s operations.
Among the distinctive features of these vehicles is a reinforced chassis on the front trailer, designed to withstand the demands of towing and braking. They also have an ingenious coupling system that allows the front trailer to travel between Madrid and Barcelona, while the rear trailer can move towards Fribourg, demonstrating the ability of both semi-trailers to operate autonomously.
Rubén Gavela, General Manager of DHL Freight Iberia, expressed his satisfaction with the integration of this technology into the company’s fleet, noting that it represents an optimal and efficient solution. Gavela emphasized, “It is a pride to start working with these vehicles. Our goal is to continue moving towards more sustainable and quality transport for our customers.” With this initiative, DHL Freight reaffirms its commitment to innovation in the transportation sector and its responsibility towards the environment.
