Exporting GIF in Snipping Tool: A Preview for Windows Insiders

Microsoft has begun rolling out a much-anticipated update for the Snipping Tool, a screenshot capture application, for Windows 11 users in the Canary and Dev channels. Version 11.2505.21.0 of this application introduces a new feature that allows users to export screen recordings in GIF format, a capability that promises to enhance user productivity.

With this update, converting short recordings into easily shareable moments is made simpler. To use this feature, users can access the Snipping Tool’s screen recorder by using the keyboard shortcut Win + Shift + R or by launching the application and switching to recording mode. Once the recording is complete, a preview will be shown where users can click the “Export GIF” button in the top toolbar.

After this option becomes available, users will be prompted to select the quality of the GIF, choosing between low and high resolutions. Additionally, they will be able to save the exported file to their computer or copy it directly to the clipboard. However, it is important to note that this functionality is limited to videos that are 30 seconds or shorter; if a video exceeds this duration, the tool will only export the first 30 seconds.

Microsoft developers have encouraged users to submit their feedback through the Feedback Hub, where they can share their thoughts and suggestions about this new update. Dave Grochocki, product manager of the Windows core apps team, has expressed the company’s interest in receiving input from the community, emphasizing the importance of active user participation in the development of these tools.
