FCC Environment Responds to the Garbage Strike Crisis in Madrid

Here’s the translation to American English:

Amid the ongoing strike by waste collection workers in Madrid, the companies responsible for the service have decided to clarify certain points to combat the misinformation surrounding this situation.

On April 22, a preliminary agreement was reached with the workers’ representatives, although it was not subsequently supported by the assembly. The financial offer presented by the companies involves an accumulated increase of 24% over a six-year period, an option that doubles the expectations of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for that same timeframe. This proposal is similar to the agreement signed days earlier for the selective collection of glass and paper/cardboard.

Regarding compensation, it is noted that the current average salary of waste collection staff in Madrid is more than 60% higher than the national average. Furthermore, in the past five years, salaries have recorded an accumulated increase of 12%, which contradicts the notion that there has been a stagnation in wages.

The companies responsible for the service assert that they are meeting 100% of the required Minimum Services on a daily basis, although their proper execution is hindered by acts of sabotage against the collection vehicles. They also warn that the strike call has legal defects that invalidate it, and thus have submitted a request to the Regional Institute of Mediation and Arbitration.

Currently, waste collection in Madrid is divided into three lots. FCC Medio Ambiente is responsible for districts such as Centro, Tetuán, and Chamberí. On the other hand, the UTE composed of Valoriza, Acciona, and OHL covers other districts like Salamanca and Retiro, while the UTE Urbaser-Prezero is responsible for Arganzuela and Carabanchel, among other areas.
