The situation in Gaza has reached alarming levels, according to a recent report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Numerous deadly incidents have been documented, including attacks on shelters for displaced persons, resulting in dozens of deaths. The report indicates that 65% of the Gaza Strip is in areas considered dangerous or under active displacement orders.
On April 3, devastating attacks were carried out in the town of Ash Shuja’iyyeh, where several residential buildings were bombed, causing the death of 15 Palestinians and leaving many trapped under the rubble. In a separate attack, two buildings of a school housing displaced persons were hit, causing at least 21 deaths, most of them children, and leaving over 100 injured. The Palestinian Civil Defense has expressed difficulties in carrying out rescue tasks due to lack of resources.
Children in Gaza are in a critical situation. According to data provided by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and UNICEF, since the resumption of attacks on March 18, it is estimated that at least 100 children die or are injured every day. Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA Commissioner-General, has denounced that this conflict is robbing the childhood of thousands of minors and has described Gaza as a “forbidden land” for children.
In the past two weeks, over 280,000 people have been displaced, including around 100,000 from Rafah. Displacement orders have affected various areas in northern Gaza, where thousands of people seek refuge in already overcrowded spaces.
In addition, a report from the United Nations Office for Human Rights has pointed to a deterioration in public order in the region, with reports of killings and the disproportionate use of force by local police. These incidents, which include fatal shootings in an attempt to control crowds desperate due to resource scarcity, have caused great concern.
In the face of this humanitarian crisis, the UN has issued an urgent call to all authorities to respect international human rights standards and has reminded Israeli authorities of their obligation to ensure public order in Gaza. The situation continues to escalate, and the international community watches with growing concern the suffering of the civilian population.
