Greenco: Analyzing the Environmental Impact of Technology

A new resource for environmental education has been launched, primarily aimed at young people, with the goal of raising awareness about the environmental impact of daily technology use. It is a free app developed by the European project GreenCo, which aims to inform users about how their technological habits affect the environment.

The reality is that every action related to technology, from sending a text message to downloading a video, requires a large amount of energy and water. This energy, often comes from non-renewable sources such as fossil fuels. The operation of data centers and communication networks has a significant impact on the environment. In addition, the production of electronic devices generates waste that, if not properly managed, can pollute the environment. The increasing demand for materials and minerals for the production of these devices also raises serious concerns about their extraction and sustainability.

The Erasmus+ Greenco project focuses on offering resources that promote good practices in the use of technology. Among its initiatives, it includes an explanatory e-book and a free online course that address four key areas: energy consumption, electronic resource management, legislation, and European initiatives. However, the most innovative and attractive resource is the gamified app, specially designed to capture the interest of young people.

The GreenCo App uses characters and narratives linked to Earth and Mars to motivate users to face questions and challenges related to the environment. As they interact with the content, players gain knowledge about the impact of their technological choices in a fun and entertaining way.

Furthermore, the app, developed by the University of Alcalá, is digitally accessible, complying with European guidelines that allow people with disabilities or technological difficulties to access information. This aspect makes it a valuable tool for secondary education centers, vocational training, and universities, where it can be used to promote awareness and learning about technological sustainability.

The app is available for free online and can be used on various devices, including computers, tablets, and mobile phones. Interested individuals can access it through the project’s official website.
