Historic Meeting in Syria between the UN Human Rights Chief and the Damascus Provisional Authority

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, made a historic visit to Damascus, marking the first time a High Commissioner has met with Syrian leaders. During his meeting with Ahmad Al-Sharaa, leader of the interim authorities and a key figure in the overthrow of Bashar Al Assad, Türk received assurances about respecting human rights for all Syrian citizens, as well as for different sectors of society.

Despite these promises, Türk also underscored the enormous challenges facing Syria. According to him, the country is experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with an alarming 90% of its population living in extreme poverty. The health system is in critical condition, with hospitals overwhelmed and schools closed, while millions of Syrians remain displaced, both internally and externally. In this context, the High Commissioner urged the international community to act in a coordinated manner to ensure basic rights such as food, education, health, and housing.

Türk called for an “urgent reconsideration” of the sanctions imposed on Syria, suggesting that these measures should be evaluated based on their impact on the lives of citizens. During his visit, he also heard heart-wrenching testimonies from torture victims, including those who have suffered in the infamous detention center of Sednaya, a place where the lives of inmates are marked by an environment of terror and constant risk of torture or execution.

The High Commissioner described the devastation he witnessed in the Jobar neighborhood, emphasizing the catastrophic effects of bombings and the use of chemical weapons against civilians, actions he considers among the most serious crimes under international humanitarian law.

Türk highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian assistance for the country’s reconstruction, reaffirming the commitment of the Office of the High Commissioner to supporting inclusive processes in Syria. In such a delicate moment, the High Commissioner expressed his wish that all Syrians can thrive together, regardless of their background or beliefs, and work towards building a common future.
