Dr. Anna Bigas has been appointed as a visiting professor by the Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland, as part of the innovative InFLAMES project, which aims to strengthen collaboration between this prestigious university and the University of Turku. This project is focused on interaction with renowned experts in the field of immunology. Currently, Bigas holds the position of coordinator of the Stem Cells and Cancer Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, where she has developed a notable career in medical research.

Dr. Bigas’s work focuses on multiple aspects related to the generation of blood stem cells in laboratory conditions and the study of mechanisms of resistance to chemotherapy in acute leukemias. With her appointment, it is expected that her experience and knowledge will significantly contribute to advancements in these important areas of research, crucial for the development of new therapies in hematology.

The InFLAMES project stands out for its focus on knowledge transfer and improvement in understanding immune responses, whether normal or dysregulated, in a variety of health and disease conditions. In addition to Dr. Bigas, the project also includes the participation of Dr. Ricardo Henriques, from the Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology António Xavier of Portugal, who joins as a visiting professor, and acknowledges the collaboration of other renowned academics in the field of medical research, such as Dr. Hans Clevers from Roche and Dr. Sarah Coupland from the University of Liverpool.

This initiative highlights the importance of abnormal immune reactions, identified as key pathogenic moments in various diseases, and underscores the commitment of these academic institutions to advancing science in the health environment. The integration of international experts in this project promises to have a significant impact on the development of innovative strategies to address current medical challenges.
