Increase in the Risk of Escalation of the Conflict in Ukraine Due to Drone Incursions in Poland

Here’s the translation to American English:

The UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary Di Carlo, expressed her concern to the Security Council about the chilling escalation of the war in Ukraine and the potential implications for regional security. This warning was issued at an emergency meeting convened following the recent drone incursions in Poland.

The Polish government reported that during the night of September 9 to 10, 19 Russian drones penetrated its airspace, prompting the request for this urgent meeting. In response, authorities managed to intercept and shoot down some of the drones, marking a historic moment as it is the first time incursions of this kind have been recorded in the airspace of a neighboring country since the conflict in Ukraine began. Furthermore, it is the first occasion on which Poland and its NATO allies chose to use force in response to a perceived threat.

As a precautionary measure, Poland temporarily closed the airports in Warsaw and Rzeszów and limited air traffic in the eastern part of the country. While no human casualties were reported, damage was recorded in several residential areas. In this context, Di Carlo emphasized that the recent events highlight the danger the war in Ukraine poses to the region’s security, as well as the risk of escalation of the conflict.

The incident also jeopardizes recent diplomatic efforts aimed at ending what has been described as a “brutal and unjustified war.” In light of these facts, Di Carlo called for a total, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the U.S. representative to the Security Council reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to defend every inch of NATO territory and announced that Washington is consulting with Poland and other allies under Article IV of the North Atlantic Treaty. The Danish delegate also expressed concern, characterizing the airspace violation as a “serious threat” to all countries bordering Russia, calling it “dangerous and reckless.”

From Moscow, the Russian representative dismissed the accusations, claiming that Poland acted hastily in blaming Russia without providing compelling evidence, and reiterated his country’s willingness to engage in dialogue. The UN representative concluded that the United Nations is not in a position to verify the claims regarding the incident, further complicating the situation in the region.
