Home security has become increasingly important among Spanish citizens, especially following the recent report from the Ministry of the Interior revealing a significant rise in thefts across various regions of the country. Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and Andalusia stand out as the most affected regions in the first half of 2025.
Catalonia tops this distressing ranking, recording a total of 18,039 thefts, which accounts for 21% of all incidents nationwide. The Valencian Community ranks second with 14,459 thefts, making up 17% of the total, followed by Andalusia with 13,343 thefts and 15.5% of the crimes. Meanwhile, the Community of Madrid, known for its security concerns, holds the fourth spot with 9,588 thefts, representing 11% of the total. The Basque Country ranks fifth with 4,847 thefts and has experienced a 12% increase compared to the same period last year.
Interestingly, while thefts have decreased nationally by 11% in the first half of 2025, the sophistication of methods used by criminals has increased. More advanced techniques have been reported, such as the use of professional lock picks, frequency jammers, and complex entry methods like “bumping,” suggesting that thefts are becoming more meticulously planned.
José González Osma, general director of ADT, a company specialized in electronic security, emphasizes the importance of anticipation and knowledge about the techniques that thieves employ. To empower citizens, González Osma offers several practical tips for home protection, including reinforcing doors and windows, simulating presence at home using programmable lights, adopting routines that do not reveal prolonged absence, and employing smart security systems that alert about intrusions.
As concern for home security continues to grow, the expert highlights that the key lies in using advanced technology and staying informed, ensuring not just protection but also peace of mind for families affected by this troubling phenomenon.
