For the 2024 tax season, Intuit has decided to raise the bar through generative artificial intelligence, using the advanced Claude language model from Anthropic on Amazon Bedrock, backed by Intuit’s proprietary tax engine. This integration will allow individual taxpayers to get easy-to-understand contextual explanations of tax calculations, as well as real-time accuracy checks.
Taxes, with their complex regulations and nuances, can be a real maze even for the most experienced. The tax code includes over 15,000 federal and state forms for individuals and businesses in the U.S. Americans are estimated to spend 8.9 billion hours each year preparing their taxes. To simplify this experience, Intuit’s TurboTax products, powered by artificial intelligence, guide consumers through the process. A significant challenge is explaining complex calculations in an easy-to-understand way, allowing taxpayers to file their taxes confidently and seamlessly connect with a human expert when needed. According to Nhung Ho, VP of AI at Intuit, “With Intuit Assist for TurboTax, we wanted to answer every customer question on how they arrived at their final tax result, and we had to do this in clear and concise language, so they had peace of mind before filing their taxes.”
Drawing on their years of domain expertise, a robust data set, and their proprietary tax knowledge engine, Intuit worked closely with Anthropic and Amazon Web Services to enhance user confidence by integrating Claude through Amazon Bedrock into their financial assistant, Intuit Assist for TurboTax. During federal tax reviews where customers see a summary of their return, the combined work of Intuit, Anthropic, and AWS provides simple explanations of tax calculations. Together, helping users better understand how their tax result is calculated will allow them to feel confident that their taxes were filed correctly.
In June 2023, Intuit announced their generative artificial intelligence operating system (GenOS), which operates on AWS infrastructure and enables the company’s developers to design, build, and deploy innovative generative AI experiences. GenOS serves as the primary platform for implementing production generative AI applications or capabilities across the company. Last fall, Intuit began experimenting with Claude from Anthropic through Amazon Bedrock.
Each year, tax filing is a seasonal process between January 1 and October 15, so the ability to quickly scale to meet the needs of millions of Intuit customers during this period was a critical factor for the success of tax explanation with Claude from Anthropic on Amazon Bedrock. Nhung explained: “Amazon Bedrock provided Intuit with the latency, scalability, and reliability to introduce AI-powered tax explanations to their customers. This allowed Intuit to offer valuable generative AI experiences to its users.”
The company leveraged the elasticity of AWS to obtain resources as needed, and release them when no longer needed. The provisioned performance for Amazon Bedrock allowed Intuit to achieve the scalability and latency required to serve millions of customers since January 2024. Additionally, it implemented a multi-region setup to provide the resilience necessary for a critical application. A private connection between TurboTax’s Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and Amazon Bedrock ensured that user data was adequately protected.
Intuit aims to simplify tax explanations, instill confidence in users, and offer simplified management of Claude from Anthropic with Bedrock, thus facilitating secure scalability. For the 2024 tax season, Intuit’s innovative use of Claude from Anthropic on Amazon Bedrock is helping to demystify the complexity of tax filing.
