On July 6, 2024, the Vehicle Technical Inspection (ITV) in the European Union began to verify the presence and correct operation of ten Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in new vehicles. The regulation, which has been in effect for two years, will be mandatory for all new vehicles registered from this date.
The ten ADAS systems that will be subject to verification include:
– Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA): This system connects the traffic sign reading camera with the allowed speed, preventing the driver from exceeding the limit by acting on the engine. It includes a switch to deactivate it or the possibility to override it by pressing the accelerator.
– Drowsiness and Distraction Warning (DDR): Detects the driver’s movements and driving time to warn them about the need to stop and rest, helping to prevent accidents due to fatigue.
– Emergency braking with special protection for vulnerable road users: Uses cameras and sensors to detect obstacles and automatically brake if the driver does not react in time, reducing the severity of potential collisions.
– Rear camera with cross-traffic detection: When parking, this system issues a warning signal or brakes the vehicle if it detects an imminent risk of collision with other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, or scooter users.
– Lane Departure Warning (LWD – LKA – LKS): Alerts the driver with a sound signal and steering wheel vibration if the vehicle unintentionally drifts from the lane, helping to maintain the correct trajectory.
– Rear Seat Belt Alert (SBR): Emits an acoustic signal to alert about the lack of seat belt usage in the rear seats.
– Ignition interlock breathalyzer: Blocks the engine if the driver fails an alcohol test, preventing the vehicle from starting if alcohol has been consumed.
– Event data recorder / black box (EDR): Records crucial information about the vehicle’s status and accident conditions for later analysis, similar to tachographs used in freight or passenger transport.
– Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): Maintains a constant speed set by the driver and adapts to traffic, providing greater comfort and safety in driving.
– Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS): Monitors tire pressure to ensure it stays at the recommended level by the manufacturer, avoiding risks associated with underinflated or overinflated tires.
The Spanish Association of Collaborating Entities with the Authorities in the Vehicle Technical Inspection (AECA-ITV) emphasizes the importance of regulating the verification of these systems to ensure their proper operation throughout the vehicle’s lifespan. Currently, only four of the ten systems (EDR, DDR, ISA, and LWD – LKA – LKS) have specific regulations. Without proper regulation, there is a risk that safety systems will not be maintained in optimal conditions, which could compromise road safety.
In Spain, this regulation is not yet being applied due to the lack of specific regulations. It is crucial that these regulations be developed and approved to ensure that all ADAS systems can be properly verified in ITV.
