Nursing in Guipuzkoa in Action: Defending Competencies and Professional Future

Here’s the translation:

Today, 5,638 nurses in Gipuzkoa celebrate their international day with the aim of raising awareness about their profession and honoring those who have recently retired. Under the motto “Ask Your Nurse,” an informational tent has been set up in Alderdi Eder, in San Sebastián. In this space, healthcare professionals will offer advice and showcase their various skills.

From early in the morning until 8:00 PM, the tent, organized by the Official College of Nursing of Gipuzkoa (COEGI), will serve as a meeting point where the public can learn about various health topics, such as strokes, menopause, and care for ostomized individuals. There will also be recreational activities that encourage interaction and health education, making it more accessible for everyone.

At 6:00 PM, a ceremony will be held in the plenary hall of the Donostia City Hall to honor nurses celebrating their silver anniversaries in the profession, as well as over 70 professionals who have completed their careers. This event will be attended by the mayor of San Sebastián, Eneko Goia.

Arrate Zumeta, president of COEGI, highlighted the vital importance of nurses’ work in the healthcare system, stating that “we are an essential force” providing care and leadership in healthcare. In her remarks, she emphasized the urgency of protecting and investing in the profession to ensure a sustainable future in care.

The profile of nurses in Gipuzkoa reveals that 92% are women, with a diverse age range in the profession; 33.5% are under 35 years old and 21.5% are over 55. Additionally, 13.6% have specializations, reflecting a strong commitment to training and professional development in the sector.

Today’s celebration not only aims to commemorate but also has a training and advocacy approach, seeking to reinforce the vision of the crucial role that nurses play in the healthcare system and the need for adequate working conditions that support their efforts for the well-being of the community.
