Oscar Puente emphasizes the importance of sustainable mobility in city councils.

The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has advocated the need for municipalities and autonomous communities to work towards reducing polluting emissions and improving quality of life in cities.

During an event organized by the Ministry of Transport as part of European Mobility Week, Puente emphasized the importance of municipalities not stepping back from the goal of promoting new mobility. The minister reminded that local councils that fail to fulfill their obligation to work towards sustainable mobility will be penalized. “There is a real risk of having to return 1.5 billion euros of European funds linked to these areas to Europe,” Puente stated.

The Transport Minister also highlighted the government’s strong commitment to decarbonizing mobility and promoting the use of public transportation. He explained that the Recovery Plan has allocated 13 billion euros from European funds to finance the sustainable transformation of public transport fleets, the creation of low-emission zones, and the promotion of cycling and railway use.

Puente emphasized that these funds are essential for achieving greener and more sustainable mobility, and warned that missing this opportunity would have negative consequences for both public finances and the health and well-being of citizens.
