The Department of Environment, Infrastructure, and Territory of the Valencian Government has formalized a significant contract for the management of waste generated by the floods that affected the Valencian Community on October 29th. This agreement, amounting to 178.95 million euros, represents the largest contract related to the DANA, with the goal of removing a total of 750,000 tons of waste from Transfer Points and Local Collection sites.
Estimates indicate that approximately 800,000 tons of waste are concentrated in the affected areas, in a context where over 1.5 million tons have been generated due to the tragedy, a figure similar to the region’s waste production for a year. This contract has been divided into three lots, each valued at 59.6 million euros, to manage 250,000 tons of waste per lot.
The company Paprec has been selected to be awarded the third lot, responsible for managing the waste from the Picassent Transfer Point and the Local Collection Points in various municipalities, such as Alzira, Cullera, Sueca, and Tavernes de la Valldigna, among others. The Generalitat’s plan includes the progressive removal of the transfer points located in Quart de Poblet, Catarroja, and Picassent, where the waste will be treated before its final disposal in a landfill.
This service will primarily focus on non-hazardous waste, although exceptions will be made for those that may be hazardous and found in the collection sites; these will be managed by authorized companies. With this award, Paprec expands its presence in the Spanish market, and especially in the Valencian Community, bringing its expertise to mitigate the environmental and health impact caused by the floods.
