Perspectives on Industrial Concentration in the EU

Here’s the translation to American English:

In 2023, industrial concentration in the European Union showed a notable variation across different sectors, according to an analysis based on data from the EuroGroups Register. This study focuses on how employment within certain industries is dominated by one or more business groups, providing an overview of the distribution of economic power.

The five economic sectors that stood out for their high industrial concentration were, firstly, the supply of electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning, where 20.8% of employment was concentrated in the four most relevant multinational groups. This leadership in concentration is followed by the mining and quarrying sector, which reached 12.9%, as well as water supply, sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities at 11.7%. Transportation and storage ranked fourth with 9.8%, and financial and insurance activities placed fifth, with 8.7%.

In contrast, sectors such as construction, accommodation and food services, and education showed significantly lower levels of concentration, hovering around 2% or even below. This disparity in industrial concentration invites reflection on the competitiveness and market dynamics in the European Union, as well as consideration of the possible implications for future economic policies. The observed trend raises questions about market balance and the future development of strategies that promote greater industrial equity among different sectors.
