Samsung Electronics acquires the knowledge graph startup Oxford Semantic Technologies in the United Kingdom.

Samsung Electronics announced today the signing of an agreement to acquire Oxford Semantic Technologies, a British startup specialized in knowledge graph technology. Founded in 2017 by University of Oxford professors Ian Horrocks, Boris Motik, and Bernardo Cuenca Grau, the company has been recognized for its advancements in knowledge representation and semantic reasoning. Their artificial intelligence-centered engine, RDFox®, currently collaborates with various organizations in Europe and North America in sectors such as finance, manufacturing, and e-commerce.

Knowledge graph technology allows information to be stored as an interconnected network of ideas, processing data in a similar way to how humans acquire, remember, and reason about knowledge. By integrating and connecting data, this technology enhances the understanding of product or service usage, facilitating quick information retrieval and providing recommendations. Therefore, it is crucial for developing more advanced and personalized artificial intelligence solutions.

Although implementing this technology poses challenges due to the complexity of operations required to turn dynamic and vast data into usable graphs, Oxford Semantic Technologies has successfully commercialized this technology. Their engine optimizes data processing and enables advanced reasoning both in the cloud and on local devices.

Samsung Electronics has maintained a collaboration with Oxford Semantic Technologies since 2018 on various projects, including investments through Samsung Ventures. With this acquisition, Samsung secures advanced core engines for personalized knowledge graphs, integrating scattered information across different services and applications to create a user experience increasingly tailored to their preferences and usage.

The combination of this technology with artificial intelligence on devices, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series, will enable hyper-personalized user experiences while protecting the security of sensitive personal data. This technology will not only be applied to mobile devices, but also to Samsung TVs and appliances.

“We are thrilled to work with Samsung,” said Peter Crocker, CEO of Oxford Semantic Technologies. “By integrating Samsung’s expertise in user experience and data with our advanced knowledge graph and reasoning technology, we will provide Samsung’s customers with even more sophisticated personalization. Additionally, developing RDFox with Samsung and being part of a larger group will provide all our customers with even better products, services, and support.”

“As global consumers demand more personalized AI experiences, the acquisition of Oxford Semantic Technologies will further enhance Samsung’s capabilities in knowledge engineering,” commented Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, head of Samsung Research and CTO of Samsung Electronics. “This acquisition is another important step as we strive to deliver tailor-made AI experiences based on our signature technological innovation.”
