SIX Balance: Monthly Market Analysis – June 2025

During the first half of 2025, the trading landscape in European equity markets has shown notable growth, with positive data coming from SIX Swiss Exchange and BME Exchange. The combined transaction volume has surpassed €892 billion, representing a significant increase of 19.3% compared to the same period last year.

One of the main drivers of this growth has been the boom in exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which experienced a 100.8% increase in trading volume on SIX Swiss Exchange, reaching CHF 68.8 billion. This phenomenon has been accompanied by a 56.1% rise in the number of transactions, indicating renewed interest in this type of asset.

The total business volume on SIX Swiss Exchange has exceeded CHF 608.5 billion, reflecting a growth of 21.1%. There has been a 16.1% increase in equities and an 11.0% rise in fixed income, showcasing robust dynamics in the market.

Meanwhile, BME Exchange has excelled in options trading, achieving an incredible 72% increase in the number of contracts. Additionally, there has been an 8.7% rise in equities and an 11.6% increase in fixed income over the last six months, with a remarkable 31.0% growth in fixed income volume in June compared to May.

Activity has not been limited to ETFs, as the number of new structured products listed on SIX Swiss Exchange has grown by 59.9%, totaling 88,419. BME Exchange has also recorded an 18.5% increase, leading to a 33.5% rise in trading volume and a 42.5% increase in transactions of these products.

Interest in the Spanish market is palpable, with the IBEX 35 closing at 13,992 points, positioning it as one of the most favored indices in Europe, rising 20.7% in the past six months and an impressive 27.9% over the last year. In comparison, the Swiss SMI index closed at 11,855.0 points, with a 2.8% increase since the beginning of the year.

Gregor Braun, Co-Head of Cash Markets at SIX, commented on the situation, highlighting that despite the uncertainty that has characterized the semester, the robust growth in both markets is undeniable. Experience in the ETF sector has allowed for the creation of a variety of products that have maintained solid performance, reflecting growing optimism among investors.
