Social Innovation in Family Medicine: I Communia semFYC Foundation Award

The Communia semFYC Foundation has launched the Communia Award for Social Innovation in Family and Community Medicine, which in its first edition will award 10,000 euros, distributed in two categories: national and international, each with a prize of 5,000 euros. This award aims to promote and recognize initiatives that offer solutions to social and health issues, and will be given annually. The winners of this first edition will be announced during the XLVI semFYC Congress, which will take place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in November 2026.

This award represents a significant advancement in the field of Family and Community Medicine, as it is designed to encourage creativity and social commitment among professionals in the sector. The Foundation’s goal is to showcase the work of family doctors who develop new strategies to meet the needs of the most vulnerable populations, emphasizing the importance of primary care in social innovation. Projects that aim for this award should address specific social challenges, such as inequality in access to health services, unwanted loneliness, mental health in youth, care for migrants, and the impact of climate change on health. Proposals will be evaluated based on their innovation and ability to offer measurable solutions, considering a comprehensive vision of health and well-being. Remedios Martín, president of the Communia semFYC Foundation, has highlighted the potential of Family Medicine as a driver of social change and the importance of initiatives born from daily experience in Primary Care.

The jury, composed of members of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, will assess the coherence, viability, and innovation of the projects, as well as their impact on the community. An essential aspect will be that the initiatives are transferable and replicable in other contexts to maximize their positive effect.

Applications can be submitted between April and June 2026 through an online form that will be published on the Foundation’s website. Those interested in receiving updates about the process can subscribe to the foundation’s newsletter.

The announcement of this award was made at the XLV semFYC Congress, recently held in Madrid, where the importance of cooperation and community health was emphasized. During the congress, experiences of doctors in different collaboration situations were shared, and the I Solidarity Photography Contest was held, highlighting the commitment and humanity in the practice of medicine.
