Tragedy in Gaza: Over 80 Palestinians Lose Their Lives Waiting for Food

The World Food Program (WFP) has denounced the alarming situation faced by civilians in Gaza, following an attack that occurred last weekend in which more than 80 Palestinians lost their lives while trying to obtain humanitarian aid. A convoy of 25 trucks that had crossed the Zikim border crossing encountered large crowds of people desperate for food, at which point shots from snipers and Israeli tanks began, resulting in “countless” fatalities.

The WFP has strongly condemned this incident, emphasizing that the victims were civilians merely seeking sustenance in a situation of extreme starvation. Despite promises from Israeli authorities to improve humanitarian conditions, acts of violence continue to undermine those assurances, severely limiting the organization’s ability to provide vital assistance to the population of Gaza.

Yesterday, 36 people were reported dead while trying to access a humanitarian assistance center supported by Israel and the United States. The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has shared heartbreaking testimonies from workers recounting the daily suffering of the population, where children die from malnutrition and dehydration.

On another front, the situation in Deir Al-Balah has caused great alarm, as a new displacement order issued by the Israeli Army could affect between 50,000 and 80,000 people. This measure could further complicate humanitarian operations, hindering access to aid in an already critical scenario. Most residents of Gaza are under evacuation orders or in militarized areas, leaving more than 2.1 million civilians trapped.

Louise Wateridge, Emergency Officer at UNRWA, has emphasized the desperation of Gazans, who are struggling to survive amid a shortage of food and water. The situation is unsustainable, and ongoing violence only exacerbates the humanitarian tragedy faced by the region. The international community watches with growing concern the outcome of a crisis affecting millions of people caught between conflict and a lack of essential resources.
