The Holy Week of 2024 has shown an alarming increase in crime, according to a study by the electronic security company ADT. This year, there was an 11% increase in activated alarms compared to the previous year, with 60% of these signals being due to attempted theft. This phenomenon often occurs during a period when many families choose to disconnect and travel, highlighting the need to adopt security measures in homes.
Data provided by ADT’s Central Alarm Receiving Center indicate that mornings are the most susceptible time for burglaries, accounting for 40% of incidents. In contrast, afternoons and evenings represent 31% and 29%, respectively. This pattern suggests that criminals take advantage of owners’ absence during daylight hours.
Faced with this scenario, ADT experts have shared five security tips that can be vital in protecting homes during the holidays. Firstly, they insist on staying vigilant even during short getaways, as many homes remain empty simultaneously, increasing their vulnerability.
The second tip emphasizes the importance of reinforcing perimeter security, ensuring that doors and windows are properly closed. The installation of video surveillance systems is also recommended to detect intrusions and distinguish between people, vehicles, and pets.
Professional monitoring is the third key point, as modern technology allows access to systems that can alert emergency services in case of incidents. Additionally, it is suggested to simulate the presence of life in homes, using automated lights to give the impression that someone is inside, which may deter potential intruders.
Finally, it is crucial to check home supplies before leaving. Disconnecting unnecessary appliances and closing gas and water valves can prevent incidents such as fires or floods.
