16.2% increase in Overnight Reservations Through Online Platforms During the Second Quarter of 2024

During the second quarter of 2024, short-stay accommodations in the European Union experienced a notable increase in popularity through digital platforms such as Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group, and TripAdvisor. In total, 208.8 million nights were recorded, representing a 16.2% increase compared to the same period the previous year. This data highlights the growing preference for booking accommodation through these online tools.

April 2024 saw a slight year-on-year decrease of 1.8% in nightly reservations, with 53.5 million nights. However, May marked a significant recovery reaching 73 million nights, a noteworthy 31.7% increase compared to the previous year. This upward trend continued in June with 82.3 million nights, representing a 17.8% increase.

When examining the landscape by countries, Malta took the lead with a surprising 45.8% increase in nights booked in June 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. Lithuania and Sweden also saw strong growth of 28.1% and 27.4% respectively. On the other hand, countries like Belgium, the Netherlands, and Slovenia showed more moderate increases, with figures of 2.6%, 3.3%, and 6.0% respectively.

This information is the result of Eurostat’s regular publication on short-stay accommodations through online platforms. The purpose of these reports is to illustrate an upward trend in the use of these services, under an agreement with the European Commission since March 2020 to monitor and analyze this expanding sector.
