SMARCO Project: Cooperation of 13 European Countries to Enhance Technological Skills in Smart Cities

Here’s the translation into American English:

The GAIA cluster and Politeknika Txorierri have launched an innovative project within the Erasmus+ program of the European Commission, aimed at addressing the skills shortage in the field of smart cities. This initiative, called SMARCO (Skills Development for Smart Communities in Europe), will run until 2029 and is coordinated by the European Digital SME Alliance, involving 13 countries, including Spain, Italy, Greece, and Germany.

The project arises in response to the growing demand for digital solutions that optimize urban services and enhance the quality of life for citizens. According to projections, the Internet of Things (IoT) market in Europe is expected to reach a value of €84.15 billion by 2027. Despite this projection, 55% of European companies face difficulties hiring specialists in Information and Communication Technologies, highlighting the urgent need for adequate training in this sector.

SMARCO aims to bridge the training gap in smart communities, both in the short and long term, as the current training offerings do not adequately cover the necessary approaches to implement resilient and sustainable solutions. One of the pillars of the project is the creation of a new certification scheme that validates training programs in this field, a resource that currently does not exist in the market but is in high demand from the industry.

The project also includes the development of a new occupational profile that encompasses not only engineers but also public administrations that play a crucial role in adopting these technological solutions. The partners, which include universities, technology clusters, and local authorities, are committed to making SMARCO a center for skills development. This will focus on three main objectives: creating resilient communities, promoting flexible and accessible learning, and establishing a sustainable community of stakeholders that encourages continuous training in this vital area.

Through this international collaboration, SMARCO seeks to play a key role in strengthening the capabilities of smart cities and communities, preparing professionals to tackle future challenges.
