The world is at a critical turning point due to the rising confrontation between Israel and Iran, warned UN Secretary-General António Guterres during an emergency meeting of the Security Council. This session was called following Israel’s recent attacks on nuclear facilities and military infrastructure in Iran.
Guterres characterized the escalation of the conflict as a “direct threat to regional and global peace,” highlighting the devastating consequences already visible, including alarming figures of civilian casualties, destruction of infrastructure, and attacks on nuclear facilities. “We are not witnessing isolated incidents; we are heading towards chaos,” the UN leader stated, emphasizing that violence has claimed more than 240 lives on both sides.
Since June 13, the situation has intensified, with Israel launching attacks that have provoked retaliatory strikes from Iran using missiles and drones, exacerbating the crisis. Guterres urged all parties involved and the Security Council to halt the violence and resume dialogue. “Give peace a chance,” he implored, stressing the urgency of a diplomatic solution.
The Secretary-General also underscored the nuclear issue as a central axis of the conflict, calling for the strengthening of the Non-Proliferation Treaty as a fundamental pillar for global security. He highlighted the need to rebuild trust through a “credible, comprehensive, and verifiable” solution that allows full access for inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Additionally, Guterres addressed the “horrors taking place in Gaza,” emphasizing the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Middle East. In closing, he called on the international community to act with urgency and unity, warning that this decisive moment must not end in regret. “Let us act responsibly and together to save the region and our world from the abyss,” he concluded.
The situation continues to evolve, and the coming hours are expected to be crucial for the future of the region.
