Promotion of Employment in the Canary Islands: I Forum on Social Economy

On July 18, the Elder Museum of Science and Technology in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the first edition of the Canary Islands Social Economy Forum, an event promoted by the Ministry of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands. This forum aims to raise awareness of the employment opportunities provided by cooperativism in the region. Registrations are now open on the website www.foroeconomiasocial.org.

Notable participants include Isabel León, Deputy Minister of Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, and María Teresa Ortega, Director of the Canary Islands Employment Service. León has emphasized the essential role of the social economy as a driver of employability, highlighting the importance of showcasing collective initiatives that can inspire new entrepreneurs.

Additionally, the deputy minister recalled that last year, the first Catalog of the Social Economy in the Canary Islands was presented. One of the central themes of the forum will be the care sector, considered emerging due to its capacity to generate jobs in response to increasing social demand.

María Teresa Ortega, for her part, stressed that the social economy plays a crucial role in the islands, encompassing a wide spectrum that includes cooperatives, worker cooperatives, and special employment centers. Currently, it is estimated that there are around 4,000 entities of this type in the Canary Islands, which generate nearly 19,000 jobs.

The forum will feature renowned speakers, such as Aicha Belassir, General Director of Social Economy and Corporate Social Responsibility of the Spanish Government, and Juan Antonio Pedreño, President of the Spanish Business Confederation of Social Economy (CEPES). Additionally, a panel of academic experts and representatives from social entities has been scheduled, which promises to enrich the dialogue on the impact of the social economy in the archipelago.
