Samsung and Johns Hopkins APL Receive the 2025 R&D 100 Award for Their Innovative Peltier Cooling Technology.

Samsung Electronics has announced a significant achievement for its new Peltier cooling technology, developed in collaboration with the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. This innovation has been recognized at the prestigious R&D 100 Awards 2025, often referred to as the “Nobel of Engineering” or “The Oscars of Innovation.” This award highlights the 100 most innovative technologies globally each year, marking over six decades since its inception.

The Samsung Life Solutions team and the APL have managed to improve the efficiency of Peltier devices by nearly 75%. This advancement has been achieved through the application of nanoengineering techniques and the use of new thin-film semiconductor materials. Consequently, they have developed a high-efficiency Peltier refrigerator that outperforms traditional vapor-compression refrigerators. The results of this research were also published in the journal Nature Communications in May 2025.

Joonhyun Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Samsung Research’s Life Solutions team, stated that the recognition at the R&D 100 Awards reflects both the innovation and practical utility of their technology. This achievement reinforces Samsung’s position as a leader in next-generation cooling solutions and underscores the company’s commitment to continue developing technologies that add value to various industries and to society as a whole.

The Peltier cooling technology stands out for being sustainable and refrigerant-free, as well as operating with a solid-state system. This technique allows for fast and precise temperature control, with applications spanning sectors such as semiconductors, medical devices, automotive electronics, and data centers.

Samsung Electronics has expressed its intention to continue driving innovative research to develop technologies that will have a significant impact on the future.
