Traveling and Running in the Middle Ages: The Red Circuit – Running Through the Middle Ages Keeps Opening Paths

Here’s the American English translation:

The Network of Medieval Cities and Towns has issued an invitation this summer for sports and history enthusiasts to discover historical monuments in the Iberian Peninsula through physical activity. Among its main events are the XI Night Monumental Race in Almazán, scheduled for August 23, and the traditional San Juan Degollao Cross in Laguardia, taking place on August 28. These events not only provide emotional routes through historic sites but also enhance the experience with music and local festivities.

The Circuit Red-Running the Medieval began in February with a large Trail Marvão event, which brought together over 500 running and hiking enthusiasts in the picturesque Portuguese town. This event, inspired by the legend of Ibn Maruán, featured three categories suitable for all audiences, promoting an atmosphere of culture, sport, and community.

The Night Monumental Race in Almazán will traverse its historic center and the banks of the Duero River, promising an evening full of excitement and community involvement. Meanwhile, the San Juan Degollao Cross in Laguardia will take place in a festive setting, where the medieval streets will be filled with music and dancing for all ages.

As autumn progresses, the event calendar continues with the Donibane Lohizune-Hondarribia Half Marathon on October 26 and the VIII Trail Gathering “In the Footsteps of Valbón” in Valencia de Alcántara on December 8. This latter event explores natural landscapes and historic sites, and is highly anticipated by many runners and hikers who appreciate its inclusive nature and welcoming environment.

To close the year, the Medieval Network has organized the XII San Silvestre of Estella-Lizarra on December 31, a race that annually gathers hundreds of participants to send off the year in a festive and athletic atmosphere. On the same day, the San Silvestre Seguntina will also be held in Guadalajara.

In addition to the sporting activities, all participants in each race have the chance to enter a raffle to win a tourist experience for two in another city within the Network. This prize includes accommodation, meals, and guided cultural visits, providing an additional incentive to explore and enjoy the cultural heritage.

The Circuit Red-Running the Medieval is committed to offering distances and routes tailored for runners of all levels, connecting medieval towns and cities through sports, culture, and active tourism.
