Birth care has undergone a significant change in recent years, characterized by an approach that prioritizes both safety and respect for each mother’s decisions. At Policlínica Gipuzkoa, Dr. Juan Céspedes, head of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department, states that women choosing this clinic seek a safe and personalized birth experience with a plan tailored to their needs, ensuring privacy and comfort.
Céspedes highlights that women’s expectations have evolved: “They no longer focus solely on a pain-free delivery, as was the main demand a few decades ago. Today, they seek a birth process that allows them to make decisions throughout.” This new approach is supported by a medical service available 24/7, an aspect highly valued by expectant mothers.
Care at Policlínica Gipuzkoa begins well before the day of delivery. From the first check-up, they offer a comprehensive and personalized approach for each pregnant woman. Monthly consultations and various diagnostic tests are conducted, ranging from blood tests and ultrasounds to a wide array of genetic tests, ensuring a complete evaluation of the pregnancy.
The service includes a variety of diagnostic tests, both invasive and non-invasive. “We have ultrasounds, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, and maternal blood DNA tests when necessary,” explains Céspedes, emphasizing the importance of these tools in monitoring the pregnancy.
To facilitate families’ adaptation to the birth process, the clinic offers the “Paritour,” a free guided visit that tours key areas that will be used on the day of birth, including the Emergency Department, monitoring room, and delivery room, among others.
Upon admission, Céspedes emphasizes that women with doubts about the onset of labor can go to the emergency service, where they will be evaluated by a gynecologist or a midwife. If it is determined that they are in labor, they will be admitted to a private room for monitoring the progress of the process. In the event of water breaking, an admission of 12 to 24 hours will proceed to observe the natural progression of labor; if it does not progress adequately, induction will be considered.
During the dilation phase, patients enjoy a calm and comfortable environment. Once the necessary centimeters are reached, they are transferred to the delivery room, strategically located next to the operating room for quick intervention in case of complications. “If a cesarean is required, it is addressed immediately by the medical team available 24/7,” concludes Dr. Céspedes, reaffirming the clinic’s commitment to the safety and well-being of both mothers and their babies.
