With the arrival of autumn and the drop in temperatures, the Basque Country is facing a new risk scenario due to the increase in respiratory viruses, especially influenza and COVID-19. In this context, Policlínica Gipuzkoa has launched an immunization campaign, calling on the population to get vaccinated as soon as possible. This campaign is crucial for protecting the most vulnerable groups and for curbing the spread of these viruses.
Dr. José Manuel Calderón, a specialist in Preventive Medicine at Policlínica Gipuzkoa, has pointed out that “respiratory viruses, including COVID and influenza, circulate more widely in cold weather, making us more prone to infections.” Among the most affected groups, he highlights individuals over 60 years old, those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes or hypertension, and immunocompromised patients. He also emphasizes the importance of vaccinating pregnant women and healthcare personnel. “The aim is to directly protect these groups and, indirectly, the patients we care for.”
The main goal of immunization is to protect individuals from potential severe forms of illness and to break the chain of transmission. “It is vital to interrupt the spread of these viruses. Vaccination helps prevent the healthcare system from becoming overwhelmed by reducing hospitalizations and stays in intensive care units,” comments Dr. Calderón.
Regarding the possibility of administering both vaccine doses in the same appointment, the specialist assures that “the co-administration of these vaccines is safe, and we have not observed any adverse effects or interactions between them.” At Policlínica Gipuzkoa, it is emphasized that while vaccination is not mandatory, it is highly recommended. With the recent start of the campaign, Dr. Calderón invites all at-risk groups to get vaccinated in a timely manner to protect their health and that of others.
