A new study by workplace consultancy Steelcase has revealed how hybrid work, artificial intelligence, and employee experience are transforming the concept of the office. According to the study, 96% of companies plan to make significant changes to their offices in the next two years. After a period of uncertainty and testing different work models, organizations are defining how they want their workplaces to be, focusing on employee well-being and flexibility.
The study, based on a survey of 500 executives, details various transformations that will affect the design and use of offices throughout the year. With hybrid work becoming more common, the trend is that nearly 70% of employees will attend the office at least three days a week, while about half will do so in person full time. This new dynamic has led companies to reconsider space usage, favoring versatile environments that allow for both concentration and collaboration.
Furthermore, the irregular flow of employees during the week is promoting the implementation of more efficient models that allow for adjusting work capacity without the need to oversize the office. Regarding the influence of artificial intelligence, offices are evolving to naturally integrate technology, including areas designed for the use of AI assistants and optimized acoustics for voice systems. However, it is also recognized that the intensive use of these tools can increase cognitive load, which has motivated the creation of spaces that allow disconnecting from digital overstimulation and mentally recovering.
The office has also become a strategic space for attracting and retaining talent. Nowadays, it is not only designed to accommodate workstations but to offer experiences that add value to employees and improve their performance. According to Steelcase, 70% of executives plan to move to higher quality facilities, seeking environments that encourage office attendance.
In this new work landscape, the importance of collaboration, creativity, and human connection are highlighted as key benefits that office work can offer over remote work. Offices are conceived as dynamic ecosystems, organized in zones that facilitate various activities, from individual work to learning and relaxation. At the same time, sustainability and inclusion are presented as relevant priorities in this design.
The conclusions of this research suggest a paradigm shift in the perception of the workplace, where the office is transformed from a static place into a strategic tool that promotes both employee well-being and business success.
