A Mexican military officer leads the UN mission in India and Pakistan.

A new leader has risen in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Himalayas. Brigadier General Ramón Guardado Sánchez, originally from Veracruz, Mexico, has been appointed as the commander of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). This mission, established in 1948, aims to primarily monitor the ceasefire and the situation in the conflict-ridden region of Jammu and Kashmir, where tensions between the two countries persist.

Guardado Sánchez officially assumed his responsibility on December 23rd, expressing his pride in being able to contribute to one of the oldest UN missions. “It is an honor to take on this role and contribute to one of the United Nations peacekeeping missions,” commented the general, who feels prepared to face the challenges that lie ahead.

This appointment not only represents a personal achievement for the general, but also a significant milestone for Mexico, which will see one of its officers command UN forces for the first time. Over the years, Mexico has maintained a commitment to peace operations, sending personnel to various missions since 1992.

Currently, a contingent of 20 members of the Mexican army, including nine women, is deployed in various UN peace operations in regions such as Western Sahara, the Central African Republic, and Colombia, reaffirming the country’s commitment to the organization’s efforts to promote global peace.

With a distinguished military career, Guardado Sánchez has served as the Commissioner of the National Guard in Yucatán and has been the commander of the Joint Peace Operations Training Center. His educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in Military Administration and a Master’s in National Security, preparing him for this important role.

The general will take over from Rear Admiral Guillermo Pablo Ríos of Argentina and has expressed his commitment to work towards achieving a positive impact in conflict-affected regions. “My experiences will guide my efforts to support lasting peace in this region,” concluded Guardado Sánchez, who firmly believes that peacekeeping is crucial for stability in conflict-marked areas.
