The XXI edition of the 24-hour ultra-endurance track race will take place on December 14 and 15 at the Municipal Athletics Stadium Joaquim Serrahima in Barcelona. This marathon activity has a charitable purpose: all funds raised will be donated to the Amics de l’Hospital del Mar Foundation to support research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
This unique sports event invites participants to run relay races uninterruptedly for 24 hours, with the goal of covering a total distance of 260 kilometers. In this edition, the participation of a team composed of 24 neurologists from the Hospital del Mar stands out, who have joined the KMSXELA initiative. This campaign aims to increase the visibility of ALS through sports, bringing the cause to a wider audience.
Those who wish to contribute to this noble cause can make donations through BIZUM with the code 01778. Additionally, those interested in receiving a certificate of their donation can request it by sending an email to the dedicated address for this campaign, mentioning “24 Neurologists Hospital del Mar”. Contributions can also be made directly on the foundation’s website.
The Hospital del Mar houses a specialized unit for the treatment of ALS patients, offering high-quality multidisciplinary services. This team includes professionals in Neurology, Pulmonology, Endocrinology and Nutrition, as well as in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Currently, the unit assists more than 50 patients and actively participates in several research projects, in addition to collaborating with the ENCALS platform and being part of different internationally relevant clinical trials.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a rare neurodegenerative disease, which affects approximately two people per 100,000 inhabitants annually in Catalonia. Life expectancy after diagnosis is usually between three and five years, underscoring the urgency of investing in research to find more effective treatments and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Therefore, events like the 24-hour ultra-endurance race are crucial to advance in the fight against this devastating disease.
