Advances and Challenges of Spanish Construction in the BIM 2024 Report by buildingSMART

The recent “BIM Situation Report in Spain 2024,” released by buildingSMART Spain, has shed light on the progress and challenges of adopting Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology in the construction sector in Spain over the last decade. According to the report, there has been a significant increase in the implementation of this technology, evidenced by the fact that nearly 12% of public tenders now require its use, while 32% of organizations have incorporated BIM into their processes.

Despite these advances, the report highlights a persistent obstacle: the lack of qualified personnel. This shortage of specialized training prevents companies from fully leveraging the benefits of BIM, such as improved project efficiency and cost reduction. To address this issue, various educational institutions and training centers have taken steps to increase the availability of BIM training programs.

A notable example is the university collaboration center butic, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary with the launch of an ambitious scholarship program. These financial aids, which can reach up to 8,000 euros, cover 80% of the cost of their master’s degrees in BIM and 3D Visualization. This initiative aims to democratize access to quality training and reduce the shortage of qualified professionals in the market.

Furthermore, the report emphasizes the regional variations in BIM adoption, with Catalonia standing out as the leading region in this respect. However, significant challenges remain, such as the costs associated with the implementation of BIM and the need to standardize processes. Nevertheless, the future of BIM in Spain looks promising, thanks to an increasing incorporation in construction projects and a greater recognition of its benefits in terms of sustainability and efficiency.
