Advances and News at Hospital del Mar: Health and Wellness in the City Center

The recent edition of the Diada Pneumològica, held from April 3 to 5 at the Campus Ciutadella of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, was a resounding success for the professionals at Hospital del Mar. This event, which brought together experts in the field of pneumology, was organized by the Societat Catalana de Pneumologia in collaboration with the hospital’s Pulmonology Service. During the celebration, various outstanding projects were awarded, reflecting the commitment and innovation in research related to respiratory diseases.

One of the main awardees was Dr. Albert Sánchez Font, who received the ANDBANK grant worth 12,000 euros. His project, titled ‘Multiomic signatures of subjects at high risk of lung cancer: an approach from screening’, aims to conduct a thorough follow-up of 300 people over six years with the goal of investigating the effectiveness of screening for early detection of lung cancer.

In the field of communications, two physiotherapists from Hospital del Mar stood out with important recognitions. Ana Balañá was awarded for her study ‘Telemonitoring associated with synchronous video consultations in patients with home ventilation: Is it an efficient and effective intervention?’. This work shows that remote monitoring can be as effective as in-person visits, with the added advantage of reducing costs without compromising patient survival.

On the other hand, Anna Rodó was recognized for her research ‘Cardiopulmonary exercise testing with simultaneous echocardiography after pulmonary embolism’. This study highlights the importance of combining exercise tests with echocardiography for the early detection of patients at risk of developing chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, a serious complication that can have a significant impact on quality of life.

Dr. Maria Cinta Cumpli also won an award for best oral communication for her work on the relationship between systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with bronchiectasis. Her study, titled ‘Systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in sarcopenia in patients with bronchiectasis: implications for muscle function and pulmonary rehabilitation strategies’, underscores the need for a comprehensive approach in the treatment of these conditions, considering both systemic factors and pulmonary rehabilitation treatments.

This year, the Diada Pneumològica set a record in the number of attendees and papers presented, demonstrating the growing interest in pneumological research and its importance in advancing respiratory health.
