The Hospital del Mar has been awarded in the 22nd edition of the Professor Barea Awards from the Signo Foundation, an event that took place on November 11th at the Congress of Deputies in Madrid. This prestigious recognition was granted in the category of patient experience for an innovative co-creation project that involves both patients and their families in the design of the future hospital.
The project, led by the Citizen Service and Patient Experience Department of the hospital, focuses on the expansion of the hospital infrastructure. Its main purpose is to outline the spaces of the second phase of this expansion, prioritizing the perspectives and needs of the people who most frequently use its facilities: the patients and their families. The goal is to conceptualize ideal spaces, validate and improve prototypes developed in collaboration with both citizens and healthcare professionals, using innovative methodologies.
Maribel Pérez, who is the Director of Communication and Citizen Service and Patient Experience at Hospital del Mar, explained that the design thinking methodology was used for this project, complemented by Lego’s serious play approach, to facilitate the proposal of spaces. According to Pérez, the results in terms of architecture and design reached between 70 and 100 percent effectiveness in each of the dimensions evaluated. This process included in-depth interviews and group work, all aimed at creating a hospital environment that offers comfort, tranquility, and security to patients, while improving their connection with the outside world and optimizing the quality of the waiting experience for their families.
This recognition not only highlights the quality of care and innovation in healthcare management promoted by Hospital del Mar, but also underscores a strong commitment to the active participation of patients in the construction of a healthcare system that is more humane and welcoming.
