AESAE launches initiative to combat VAT fraud in gas stations

VAT fraud in Spanish service stations continues to be a growing concern, with estimated losses of 1.2 billion euros, according to the Spanish Association of Automatic Service Stations (AESAE). This fraud, which affects both automatic and traditional gas stations, has led AESAE to request an urgent meeting with the Tax Agency. The intention is to collaborate in the development of a package of measures aimed at definitively addressing this situation that severely impacts the country’s tax revenue.

Despite recent reforms in the Hydrocarbons Law and the ongoing efforts of AESAE, the problem persists and continues to harm legally operating businesses, compromising the sector’s competitiveness. Manuel Jiménez Perona, president of AESAE, has emphasized the need for tax authorities to take quick and effective measures to combat these fraudulent practices.

The impact of the fraud goes beyond the companies involved, also representing a significant loss for the state and the funding of public services. Jiménez insists on the urgency of ensuring fair play in the market and has proposed several measures to address this problem.

Among the measures promoted by AESAE is the implementation of stricter fiscal control and a rapid inspection system to efficiently detect fraud. The association also advocates for close collaboration between the private sector and tax authorities, improving detection mechanisms and increasing sanctions for offenders.

Another prominent proposal is to hold gas stations accountable for purchasing fuel at suspiciously low prices, making it public so that consumers are aware of the implications of supporting fraud. Likewise, the creation of a agile complaints mailbox will allow addressing suspicious situations before the Tax Agency has to intervene.

AESAE, representing automatic gas stations in Spain, continues to work to promote a more efficient, safe, and accessible business model. The association defends the interests of its members and seeks to promote fair competition and transparency in the market.
