On November 26th, the Reale Arena in Anoeta will host an important event dedicated to chronic pain, a problem that affects over 12 million people in Spain. Under the Health Classroom framework, and with free access until full capacity, the latest developments in the management and treatment of this condition that significantly impacts patients’ quality of life will be discussed.
According to the Spanish Pain Society (SED), more than half of people suffering from chronic pain experience intense discomfort, with musculoskeletal, lumbar, and joint conditions being the main culprits. Arthritis, lower back pain, neck pain, and headaches are among the most common complaints, affecting the overall well-being of those affected.
Anesthesiologist Juan Martínez from the Pain Unit at Policlínica Gipuzkoa will participate in the event, emphasizing the importance of effective treatments to improve not only physical comfort but also patients’ quality of life. A success story illustrating the effectiveness of these therapies is that of Ainhoa Corral, a resident of Irún who was able to regain her pain-free life after being treated at the Pain Unit.
Ainhoa suffered a painful injury to her coccyx due to a fall, accompanied by knee problems that compromised her mobility. Thanks to the specialized care at the Unit, she can now live without significant discomfort. Her treatment included innovative regenerative therapies such as the use of platelet-rich plasma and radiofrequency for her knee, while the coccyx pain was relieved through capsaicin patches and blocks, as well as radiofrequency to reduce pain intensity.
The implementation of these procedures, mostly outpatient, allows patients to return home and resume their daily activities almost immediately. According to Dr. Martínez, 98.7% of treatments at the Pain Unit do not require hospitalization, greatly improving the patient’s experience.
The Health Classroom will also feature doctors José Miguel López and Marta Lillo, who will contribute their extensive experience in chronic pain treatment, offering new approaches to mitigate this debilitating condition. This initiative aims to provide a better understanding of chronic pain and effective tools to address it, offering hope to those who suffer from it and improving their quality of life.
