The Spanish airline Air Europa has made a significant advance in its international expansion strategy by launching operations in the Middle East through a strategic agreement with Etihad Airways. Since June 24, 2025, the company has begun operating a daily flight between Abu Dhabi and Madrid, using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on a wet-lease model.
This new service, identified as EY103, departs from Abu Dhabi to Madrid-Barajas Airport every afternoon. With this route, Air Europa not only expands its network of destinations but also strengthens its presence in a region that has become highly competitive due to the entry of major international airlines.
This is the first time Air Europa has operated regularly in the Middle East, positioning Madrid as an essential intercontinental hub. This new link provides passengers from Spain and Latin America with more direct access to the destinations Etihad serves in Asia and Africa, optimizing transit opportunities.
The agreement between the two airlines also includes code-sharing options and coordination of frequent flyer programs, allowing passengers to earn and redeem miles more conveniently and efficiently, thereby enriching their travel experience.
Javier Hidalgo, who leads Air Europa’s international strategy, explained that this operation represents a significant step in the airline’s expansion beyond Europe and Latin America. Moreover, the launch of this new route strengthens Etihad’s competitiveness in the European market.
The use of the Boeing 787-9, which offers greater energy efficiency and reduces CO₂ emissions, underscores both companies’ commitment to sustainability. With this collaboration, Air Europa not only expands its global presence but also establishes itself as a strategic partner in the realm of international aviation, solidifying its vision for sustainable growth and improving connectivity between continents.
