Eviden, the specialized computing brand of the Atos group, has teamed up with AMD to develop Alice Recoque, France’s first exascale supercomputer and the second in Europe. This high-capacity system is designed to meet the growing demands of scientific computing and artificial intelligence, operating as a true “AI Factory.”
Alice Recoque promises to exceed the performance of one exaflop per second, which translates to one billion trillion calculations in a single second. This advancement represents a 50-fold increase in system power compared to the previous system, while the energy increase will be only five times. The total investment in this ambitious project amounts to 554 million euros, partly funded by EuroHPC JU through the Digital Europe program, in collaboration with the Jules Verne consortium, which includes partners from France, the Netherlands, and Greece.
The installation of Alice Recoque will take place at the High-Performance Computing Center (TGCC) of the CEA in France, where other systems developed by Eviden are already in operation. This supercomputer’s mission is to address critical challenges in various disciplines, from sociology to science and industry, combining traditional HPC workloads with AI applications for large-scale simulations and complex data analysis.
The system will stand out for its state-of-the-art hardware, including AMD EPYC™ processors and AMD Instinct™ GPUs, offering scalable solutions connected through Eviden’s BXIv3 interconnection technology. This will ensure high performance and energy efficiency.
In addition, Alice Recoque will enable significant advances in crucial areas such as climate modeling and personalized medicine, improving the ability to process data from IoT devices and satellites. This focus on technological sovereignty translates into the integration of European technologies, with a significant proportion of its components manufactured on the continent, which will ensure the traceability of production and mitigate geopolitical risks.
With a design that includes 94 racks, the supercomputer will optimize energy efficiency, achieving 50% more efficiency per GPU. Thanks to its hardware and software innovations, Alice Recoque is expected not only to offer exceptional performance but also to align with European sustainability goals in the field of computing.
