The recent celebration of the XVIII edition of the Mediterranean Week of Economic Leaders, MedaWeek Barcelona 2024, reaffirmed Barcelona’s position as a hub of dialogue and cooperation in the Mediterranean region. During October 29th and 30th, Casa Llotja de Mar became the meeting point for delegations from 30 countries, who gathered to strengthen partnerships between the public and private sectors in order to promote economic development and ensure regional stability.
The event, organized by the Association of Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME), featured the participation of prominent political and business personalities, including Salvador Illa, President of the Generalitat, and Josep Santacreu, President of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce. Throughout the sessions, strategies to reinforce intercontinental collaboration and address challenges stemming from the current complex geopolitical landscape were discussed. The significance of Barcelona as a connection platform between Europe, Africa, and Asia was emphasized by various leaders, who agreed on the need to strengthen these ties through dialogue and cooperation.
The meeting not only provided a space for the exchange of ideas and experiences, but also served as a platform to explore business opportunities in emerging markets such as Canada and Africa. Through a series of ten multisectoral forums, participants addressed critical topics such as climate change, sustainable tourism, and the potential of emerging economies in sectors like the creative industry and sports.
In line with the innovative spirit of this edition, ASCAME has initiated conversations with entrepreneurs in the creative sector to promote the creation of start-ups and encourage the exchange of innovation, with a particular focus on the digital transformation of the Mediterranean. During the gala dinner, tribute was paid to several entities and personalities for their contribution to regional development, including the Union for the Mediterranean and the Barceló Group.
The upcoming MedaWeek, already scheduled for November 2025, will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process, an event that represents a symbol of regional collaboration in the Euro-Mediterranean area. With this milestone on the horizon, it is expected that the city will continue to play a key role as a catalyst for progress and understanding among the nations of the Mediterranean and beyond.
