Biel Glasses Smart Eyeglasses: Innovation for Glaucoma Patients’ Autonomy

An innovative solution for people with low vision has been developed by a Catalan couple, who have created smart glasses called Biel Smartgaze. This device combines artificial intelligence and mixed reality to improve the autonomy of the more than 60 million people worldwide who suffer from visual problems, especially those affected by glaucoma, one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness.

The glasses have demonstrated an effectiveness of over 95% in identifying obstacles during four pilot projects carried out in Spain and Japan. The most recent test was conducted in Barcelona, complementing previous trials conducted in Tarragona, Reus, Figueres, and Motegi. Although the numbers are encouraging, it has also been noted that 80% of participants in a laboratory environment experienced a significant improvement in their mobility when using the device.

Low vision not only affects people’s mobility but also has a serious impact on their mental health. Recent studies have indicated that patients with this condition face high rates of depression and anxiety, underscoring the urgency of effective solutions like Biel Smartgaze. This project initially emerged with the aim of helping their son Biel, who suffers from an autoimmune disease that causes low vision. Since then, the startup has been working on the commercialization of this product, and those interested in supporting the initiative can do so through the Startupxplore platform.

The development of these glasses has been made possible through collaboration with various institutions, such as the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid and the CSIC. In addition, the Biel Smartgaze glasses have been approved as medical devices by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices, endorsing both their safety and effectiveness.

These glasses have been designed to adapt to the remaining vision of the users, allowing for safer movement by identifying obstacles in real time. Among their features, they include the ability to detect changes in terrain, zoom vision, contrast enhancement, adaptations to different lighting conditions, and auditory instructions.

With plans to begin their commercialization in Spain and Europe this year, and a projection for expansion to the United States and Asia in 2026, the creators of Biel Smartgaze aim to offer a viable and accessible alternative to traditional solutions for low vision, such as guide dogs and canes. Jaume Puig, CEO of the company and Biel’s father, has stated that “Biel Smartgaze is the ultimate solution for the independence of these patients.”
