BioPatch Conquers Innomakers4Health: A Boost to Health Innovation

This weekend, Madrid hosted the seventh edition of Innomakers4Health, a competition designed to promote innovation in the healthcare sector. Organized by Wayra, Telefónica’s investment fund, in collaboration with Pfizer and the Pfizer Foundation, the event focused on accelerating the adoption of biomarkers through accessible technological solutions that support clinical decision-making.

The big winner of the day was BioPatch, an ambitious project that presents an innovative patch capable of detecting breast cancer non-invasively by measuring the electrical conductivity of cancerous cells, all at a reduced cost. This venture received recognition in the ‘Early Innovators’ category, while the ‘Startups’ category did not award any prizes.

More than 100 entrepreneurs gathered for this edition, organized into 21 teams that presented disruptive ideas aimed at addressing the current challenges in the healthcare sector. The projects sought to facilitate access to and understanding of biomarkers, with the goal of improving the quality of medical care.

Irene Gómez Luque, CEO of Wayra, expressed her satisfaction with the quality of local talent and the notable interest in this initiative. She thanked Pfizer and the Pfizer Foundation for their collaboration in the program, highlighting Wayra’s commitment to connecting the entrepreneurial ecosystem with the Spanish healthcare sector.

For his part, Sergio Rodríguez, president of the Pfizer Foundation, emphasized that “collaborative innovation is key to transforming the future of health.” He highlighted the value of Innomakers4Health as a space where creativity, technology, and social responsibility converge to tackle major healthcare challenges.

The prize awarded to BioPatch includes financial support of 3,000 euros, as well as the opportunity to accelerate their project in the InnomakersLAB, a hub created by Pfizer in partnership with Wayra. The team will also have access to a mentoring program and a workspace in Madrid, enriching the development of their initiative with guidance from experts in open innovation.
