The Auditorium of Jameos del Agua in Lanzarote was the setting for the second edition of the Azul Zero Awards, which took place last Friday, bringing together prominent international figures in sustainability, social innovation, and creativity. This event aims to highlight environmental consciousness, emphasizing beauty as a driving force for social transformation. The gala, hosted by journalist Ángeles Blanco alongside a holographic Artificial Intelligence named Zero, offered a show that combined music and projections with a strong emphasis on the theme of the year: “The magic of being alive.”
Ana Quintana, founder of Azul Zero, welcomed the attendees, emphasizing the importance of celebrating those who turn sustainability into effective action. In her words, she stressed that respect for the Earth can coexist with human progress. During the event, both the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, and the CEO of the Centers of Art, Culture, and Tourism, Ángel Vázquez, highlighted the symbolism of Jameos del Agua, where nature, culture, and development are in balance.
Betancort mentioned that Lanzarote is a benchmark for sustainability, innovation, and commitment, recalling the legacy of César Manrique, who was honored during the ceremony. The award ceremony honored prominent individuals committed to the planet and communities. Among the awardees, Dr. María Neira from the WHO called for fostering hope and positive change in everyday life.
Indigenous leader Myrna Cunningham highlighted the fundamental role of indigenous peoples as guardians of biodiversity. In a reflective speech, writer Carl Honoré spoke about the benefits of adopting a slower and more mindful approach in our lives. Likewise, biologist Carlos Mallo shared his dedication to protecting the Canary Ocean, and ECOALF founder Javier Goyeneche highlighted the feasibility of a sustainable life.
Other awardees included model Patricia Yurena Rodríguez, who addressed the importance of authenticity in life, and architect Mariam Issoufou, who commented on the influence of architecture in daily life. The gala also paid tribute to the late César Manrique, emphasizing his legacy in defending the balance between art and nature.
Astrophysicist Antonia Varela, director of the Starlight Foundation, advocated for the protection of the night sky, while José Díaz, founder of Educanepal, emphasized the transformative impact that education can have. This gala reaffirms the commitment of the Azul Zero Awards to inspire and recognize those who, from different disciplines, work for a future where progress and nature can coexist harmoniously.
