Carbon Footprint Reduction Calculator

Schneider Electric Introduces Tool to Help Reduce Buildings’ Carbon Footprint

Schneider Electric has unveiled an innovative tool aimed at assisting building owners and operators in reducing their carbon footprint. Named the Building Decarbonization Calculator, this online tool not only makes it easier to comply with increasingly stringent regulations but also optimizes investments in decarbonization. The calculator allows for the evaluation of a broad range of Energy and Carbon Conservation Measures (ECCMs), analyzing their economic viability and impact on emission reduction, guiding users toward achieving net-zero emissions.

Built upon a robust database that includes 500,000 building performance models across various types, it offers comprehensive analysis in comparison to regulations like New York’s Local Law 97 or the Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor (CRREM). This guides users through complex decisions that balance costs and environmental benefits from the present until 2050. Mike Kazmierczak, Global Vice President of Digital Energy at Schneider Electric, emphasized the calculator’s importance in meeting local regulations and enhancing the operational efficiency of buildings, a growing challenge due to the expansion of environmental regulations.

A case study in a major Boston office illustrates the application of the calculator, identifying potential energy savings worth $3.7 million, along with the opportunity to avoid $1 million in fines over the next decade, achieving a return on investment in seven years. This project included strategic updates such as advanced building management systems, improvements in LED lighting, and the incorporation of photovoltaic energy and microgrid technology.

The Building Decarbonization Calculator quickly and precisely evaluates potential energy savings and emission reductions, thanks to a dataset of predefined sector data. It also assists users in calculating the initial investment return, facilitating planning and budgeting in line with current regulations.

The development of this tool was made possible through collaboration with JLL, a leading investment management and real estate firm, and C.scale, a subsidiary of the architectural firm EHDD. JLL focuses on creating performance models, while C.scale employs its expertise in machine learning models to drive climate action.

Currently, the calculator is available through Schneider Electric’s sales teams and partners, who provide assistance to building owners in implementing more effective decarbonization strategies. For more information on their smart building solutions, visit the official Schneider Electric website.
