Catalonia’s Drive for Electric Storage and Opportunities for Renewable Energy

Catalonia has positioned itself as one of the most advanced regions in Spain in the development of electrical storage projects, a necessity that is becoming urgent due to the imminent closure of nuclear power plants projected between 2027 and 2035. By the end of 2024, the region already had an installed capacity of 534 MW, all from pumped hydroelectric plants. This growth is significant, as the goal is to reach 2,234 MW by 2030. Similarly, Catalonia leads in granting grid connection permits, with over 34% of the state total already approved or in process.

Engineer Daniel Rubio, CEO of Origen Solar, a renewable energy company based in Sant Cugat del Vallès, emphasizes that integrating photovoltaic systems with batteries is essential to ensure a stable power supply. This is especially relevant for managing the inherent intermittency of renewable energies, such as solar and wind. “It is not enough to generate renewable energy; we must know how to store and manage it,” says Rubio, reflecting a shift towards a more autonomous and resilient power supply system.

Origen Solar not only focuses on energy generation but also designs and installs customized solutions that incorporate next-generation batteries. These solutions can operate in island mode, allowing for the maintenance of power supply in the event of grid outages, thereby improving sustainability and energy security.

The company highlights the need to advance towards a decentralized and smart energy model, especially in light of recent blackout issues. Origen Solar faces various technical, regulatory, and social challenges during the energy transition and proposes a self-sufficient approach that responds to future demands.

Since its founding in February 2020, Origen Solar has been dedicated to promoting electrical self-consumption and providing complete solutions in photovoltaic solar energy and aerothermal energy, serving individuals as well as communities, businesses, and industries. With a commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, the company is establishing itself as a key player in transforming the energy ecosystem in Catalonia.
