Cator: Innovation in Circular Economy and Environmental Education

Cator reaffirms itself as a pioneering company in the field of circular economy of industrial oil, strengthening its commitment to sustainability and innovation while promoting environmental awareness. Based in Alcover, Tarragona, Cator recycles over 44,000 tons of used industrial oil annually, turning waste into renewable raw materials. Its star product, Regenoil®, provides a fundamental base for lubricants in the automotive and industrial sectors, highlighting its role in the circular production chain.

Cator’s recycling plant operates under a zero waste model, maximizing the utility of generated resources and ensuring a fully circular process. The heat energy used comes from light oils generated during the treatment of used oil, while the cooling energy is obtained from the recovery of rainwater and the recycling of process waters. In addition, 10% of the electrical energy they consume is self-generated through solar panels.

Cator allocates significant investments in R&D, focused on developing recycling technologies that provide circular solutions even for previously unrecoverable waste. In their exclusive laboratory, a specialized team works on improving product quality, optimizing processes, and opening new recycling lines. A recent achievement is the development of REGEMEG, a high-purity regenerated monoethylene glycol that is already used in various industrial applications, especially as an antifreeze, marking a significant step towards industrial circularity.

Facing the global challenge of non-recyclable plastic, Cator has made a significant investment in chemical plastic recycling. They have acquired a majority stake in the startup 2G chemical Plastic Recycling, which has created an innovative process for recycling plastics, addressing the environmental challenge with comprehensive solutions.

In addition to their industrial efforts, Cator is committed to environmental education and social engagement. Through their project El Cercle, they create a space for dialogue on circular economy and recycling, involving entities, institutions, and companies, promoting knowledge exchange towards a sustainable future. They also support community initiatives in Alt Camp and Tarragona, including the International Scholarships of the Fundació Ciutat de Valls and collaborating with the Red Cross and Banc d’Aliments, as well as sponsoring local sports and cultural activities.

Another noteworthy project of Cator is NasApp, developed in collaboration with the Rovira i Virgili University. This project applies citizen science for real-time monitoring of odor episodes, achieving a significant reduction in these types of annoyances and improving the quality of life in the region.

With each of these initiatives, Cator continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to circular economy, promoting sustainable and innovative business practices. For more details on their commitment, visit their website.
